Christianity Today is seeking a full-time assistant editor to copy edit and serve its flagship magazine in its print, online, and digital forms. The assistant editor will be our in-house expert on all things grammar and style, following closely the Chicago Manual of Style (16th ed), the American Heritage Dictionary, and CT’s own in-house style guide. The ideal CT assistant editor:
Is highly detail-oriented and deadline-driven.
Loves following—and enforcing—guidelines.
Enjoys working on a team to complete a task.
Feels personally responsible for the quality of the print magazine and website
Is a bit obsessive; known for being perfectionist, and sees this as a virtue.
Is a lifelong learner and lover of words.
Can in good conscience fulfill the mission of CT magazine and broader ministry.
Copy edit all CT print content for grammatical and factual accuracy.
Review digital and online content for grammatical and factual accuracy.
Work closely with freelance copy editor, point editors, and designers to route all print articles through various stages of editing.
Review and correct near-final PDFs, Adobe InDesign, and InSite content as an issue closes.
Stay abreast of grammatical and stylistic changes from CMS, AP, and other media outlets.
Compile and edit monthly letters to the editor section.
Correspond with freelance writers re: unsolicited manuscripts as needed.
Pitch, assign, and edit print and/or online content as dictated by the editor’s own interests and the needs of the online and print managing editors.
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, or related field.
1-3 years of experience working in editorial environment.
Familiarity with Christian history, basic theology, and evangelical culture and trends.
Must be willing to work on-site from our offices in Carol Stream, Illinois.
