The last few years pundits have dubbed that particular year as the "year of mobile" for various reasons: mobile ad spending, mobile traffic, device sales, mobile app development, and so on. Whatever year you want to assign that title, there's no argument that 2012 has seen a sea change in the direction of mobile, and 2013 will surely see more growth. In fact, the Wall Street Journal recently reported that in 2012 PC sales will dip for the first time since 2001 as tablet and smartphone sales continue to skyrocket.
For Christianity Today, mobile has been a top development priority. For the first time, over 20% of our visits are from a mobile device, and we're seeing triple digit growth annually from mobile visits. It's exciting. And it means we have a lot of work to do to provide you with a better experience on your phone or tablet.
Our teams have been hard at work determining the best routes to take for mobile development, and our web development team launched several new mobile initiatives already.
Some of our sites now have browser detection, so you'll get an optimized site whether you're on your computer or your phone. These three sites have been completed (visit them on your smartphone to test it out!)
We have plans to launch mobile-friendly sites for our other brands throughout 2013.
This fall marked a notable step into the digital-first age for Christianity Today magazine. We launched a unique iPad edition of the print magazine, and in 2013 a tablet version will be rolled out for Android and Google tablets.
Additionally, Leadership Journal and other Christianity Today publications will be launching a similar iPad edition in the spring.
The mobile landscape is constantly evolving, and we are exploring more ideas to give you the best experience in the world of mobile. For Christianity Today, 2013 looks to be a "year for mobile" too!
