Carol Stream, IL May 8, 2013—The Evangelical Press Association presented its 2013 Awards of Excellence and Higher Goals Awards at its annual convention May 1-3, 2013 in Nashville. The global media ministry of Christianity Today was honored with a total of 42 awards.
Each year the Evangelical Press Association contest honors the best work done by EPA-member publications during the past calendar year. This year nine Christianity Today brands from across the nonprofit ministry won an award. Mark Galli, Christianity Today magazine editor, reflects, "Awards like this are gratifying, and result from everyone doing their part, and of the good leadership of David Neff, last year as editor in chief. If it takes village to raise a child, it takes one to produce an award winning magazine, with a good 'mayor' to boot!"
Some award highlights included:
Cause of the Year: Extreme Poverty
The Evangelical Press Association chooses a specific cause that members can focus on. Christianity Today received 1st place this year with the article Cost-Effective Compassion by Bruce Wydick, professor of economics at the University of San Francisco. The article highlights the ten most popular strategies for helping the poor and measures their impact.
Christianity Today's global coverage
Christianity Today is known as a leader in reporting about the church worldwide, and several awards were given that had a strong international dimension to them, including:
- Quebec: Canada's Prodigal Province, a report on what evangelicals are doing in their post-Christian culture, won 1st place for Freelance Article
- The Fight for Egypt's Future, a dispatch from Cairo about their Coptic Christians, won 2nd place in the Reporting category
- Miracles in Mozambique, a feature article on missionary Mama Heidi, received 2nd place in Photo Feature and 3rd place in Single Photo: Candid
- Teaching the Dragon, a piece by Andrew Thompson on the growing universities in North Korea and northeast China, won 3rd place for Student Writer of the Year
Top digital awards
In the overall website design category, awards were given to two Christianity Today websites relaunched in 2012. LeadershipJournal.net took 1st place and ChristianityToday.com took 2nd place.
For the second straight year, the Managing Your Church blog received the Award of Excellence in the Church Ministry (Digital) category and SmallGroups.com received the Award of Excellence in the Newsletter (Digital/Email) category.
For the first time, Kyria (now TodaysChristianWoman.com) received the top award in the Devotional (Digital) category.
